Lust Caution

I finally got around to watching Lust Caution which was directed by one of my heroes Ang Lee.
The story is about a group of students who form a resistance and plan to assassinate Mr Yi, played by Tony Leung, a Japanese collaborator. The film is based on a novella by Chinese writer Eileen Chang.
The opening sequence was amazing. So much was left unsaid - I really want to
read the story upon which it is based. I"m curious as to how much is the original story and how much is Ang Lee's rewrite. I read somewhere that the character of Mrs Yi was written for the film version so that Joan Chen could have a role. I'm just curious as to how the film would work without the Joan Chen character.
As the title suggest, there's a lot of lust in this film. The second second sex scene was so intense. It was interesting how I was more comfortable watching the first sex scene
but felt like a complete voyeur when watching the second one which was really lengthy. It just went on and on, and I felt like I was intruding on someones very emotionally intimate moment. By the end of the film, you realise that Ang Lee has not thrown in that scene for pure titillation, but that depicting that emotional and physical connection between Mrs Mai and Mr Yi is central to the plot.
The guy who plays the idealistic young college student Kuang Yumin is played by Lee Hom Wang an American Chinese guy who has a music career in Taiwan.
I read somewhere that Brokeback Mountain was about Lost Paradise and this
was about eternal damnation in hell. I've watched a couple of these films lately -
both Chinese films, where people end up in eternal hell. I wonder whether different cultures have different collective psychological make-ups which influence endings and telling of stories.
