Infernal Affairs II

March 15th 2008 03:05
I managed to rent a copy of Infernal Affairs II from Planet Video. . They had Infernal Affiars III as well, but my partner wanted to pace ourselves so that we still had something to look forward to Easter weekend.

Infernal Affairs II is the prequel to the original movie. The two leads Andy Lau and Tony Leung are not in it. Instead their parts are played by their younger counterparts Edison Chen and Shawn Yue. Anthony Wong, whose father is English and Eric Tsang revive their roles as Superintendent Wong and Sam.

The film felt a lot like Godfather II. It was slower, more dialogue, with a Godfather II like soundtrack, and like Godfather II was more violent than the original. I remember Francis Ford Coppola saying something along the lines of how he disliked violence but when he had to do it on screen, he took a leaf from Kurosawa's book and always thought of ways to depict it in ways it had never been depicted before. There are some pretty gruesome and violent scenes in this movie.

Most of the actors are really accomplished. Shawn Yue does a really good job as a young Tony Leung, and watching the DVD extras he seemed to be really humble and eager to learn his craft. I like him. I'm interested in watching some of his other movies. The characters are really multi-layered and best of all there's an intelligent female role, Sam's wife, played by Carina Lau.

It isn't as exciting or suspenseful as the first film and I think you have to be a fan of the first film and be really interested in the backstory to watch this second film.

Edison Chen is probably the weakest link in the ensemble cast. I found him a little irritating and Canadian teen. He just broods and looks like a simpleton in the film. Maybe they gave him fewer lines because he couldn't handle such a dramatic role. He does look a lot like a young Andy Lau but Lau is a far superior actor - even in his youth. Edison Chen has left Hong Kong because of the internet sex scandal.. According to some tabloids, some triad members are apparently trying to kill him and others are protecting him. Sounds like the plot for another movie in the series.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing Andy Lau in the role again in Infernal Affairs III.
